Door stuck open
Safely, right now
- Leave the door where it is: forcing it down or pressing the button again can bend it.
- Keep the doorway clear of people, pets and vehicles.
- The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.
Door won't close
Safely, right now
- Don't keep hitting the button. Repeated tries can do more damage than the first fault.
- Don't step or reach under the door to move anything. If a bin, bike or snow is in the way, mention it when you call.
- Don't bypass or re-aim the safety sensors by the floor to make it close.
Spring snapped
Safely, right now
- Don't lift the door by hand and don't use the opener.
- Keep everyone, pets included, and every vehicle away from the door.
- Don't pull the emergency release while the door is open. It can drop.
Car stuck inside
Safely, right now
- Don't use the car to force the door. It can collapse.
- If you heard a bang or the door feels heavy, don't pull the release or lift it. A spring may be broken.
- Arrange another way to get where you are going for now. The car can wait inside.

The fix, explained · Fairview
What is the door doing?
EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementNothing broke outright, but the door has grown heavier each winter, opens more slowly and squeals as it moves.
The fix
On a door with two springs, replacement usually starts with a conversation about scope. Both springs have completed the same number of cycles, so when one breaks the other is typically close behind, and replacing the pair together gives the door two matched springs sharing the load evenly.
Until then
When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.
Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThe rollers on the door have been squealing for months.
The fix
Winter produces a particular version of this call. Slush melts under the door during the day, freezes overnight and glues the bottom seal to the slab.
Until then
Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementStanding inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy.
The fix
Winter is hard on the bottom of a garage door. Slush and road salt run off the car and pool exactly where the cables loop onto the bottom brackets, and wire rope that is wet and salted for four months a year rusts from the inside out.

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe door climbs with the left corner ahead of the right, then twists as it turns into the ceiling track.
The fix
Extension springs are common on the detached garages behind older houses, where a low ceiling left no room for a torsion shaft, and those garages are rarely heated. Damp summers, hard frosts and salt carried in on the car pit the spring wire over the years, and a fatigued spring most often lets go on a cold morning when the…

Book soonEmergency Release RepairA previous owner knotted the release cord around the rail and stacked storage shelves right beneath it.
The fix
The visit runs in a fixed order. On the phone you describe what the release did, where the door was, and what kind of opener hangs from the ceiling.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.
Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairThe motor runs, the chain rattles along the rail, and the door does not move a millimetre.
The fix
Winter changes what an opener is asked to do. Grease in the gear case and on the rail thickens in the cold, rollers turn stiffly, and the bottom seal can freeze to the concrete overnight so the door is briefly glued shut.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door
38%
Homes of every age. About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Where housing ages are mixed, many older houses have already had a newer door and opener fitted, so the door's age and the house's age are not the same thing. The technician reads the door itself, its spring type, tracks and opener, before recommending anything.
37%
Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).
Townhouses built in rows tend to have identical doors from the same builder, so when springs and openers age they do so together along the street. Owners often arrange service for several doors at once, and we can plan a single visit that covers the row.

Ask about a new garage door for your Fairview home.
When a garage door in Fairview has stopped, the household is usually stuck too, so we organise the day around getting the door moving safely. The technician clears the fault, checks the rest of the door so the next part does not follow, and explains what he did before he drives away.
Mississauga, Applewood Acres, Cooksville, Lakeview, Mississauga Valley, Port Credit and Shep
Explained on the spot. As each part is checked, the technician tells you what it shows and what it means for the door as a whole.
Tidiness as standard. Old springs, cables and packaging leave with us, and the workspace is swept. A clean finish is part of every visit.
Options at your pace. Hear the choices, ask your questions, take the time you need. The work starts when you say so and not before.

Which fix fits?
IfThe remote only works when you are almost in the driveway.
ThenBattery, antenna and interference check.
A weak battery or a tucked-away antenna wire shortens range; some LED bulbs in the opener can also interfere.
IfThe outside keypad lights up but the door ignores it.
The code has likely dropped out of the opener's memory; re-pairing brings it back.
IfYou have moved in and there are no remotes at all.
ThenOpener memory reset and new remotes.
We erase every old code so previous owners' remotes stop working, then program yours.
IfThe motor runs, you can hear it working, but the door never moves.
ThenChain-Drive Opener Repair.
A chain-drive opener moves your door with a steel chain that runs along a rail from a sprocket on the motor head to a trolley hooked to the door arm.
Short answers
What is the board test?
It is the contact-reversal check. A short length of 2x4 lies flat on the floor in the middle of the opening and the door is closed from the wall button. When the bottom edge meets the wood, the door should halt and travel back up without help. Passing shows the opener's down-force and travel limits are set to back off from something solid. The technician never substitutes a hand or foot for the board.
What does a new bottom seal do about water coming in?
It closes the gap between the door and the slab so rain and meltwater meet a continuous barrier. Where the driveway slopes toward the garage, or the slab edge has dipped, the seal alone is working against gravity, and a threshold seal glued to the floor adds a lip that turns water back toward the drive. The technician looks at where the water comes from and recommends the combination that suits your threshold.
Why is there a gap between the track and the edge of the door?
That gap is intentional. The rollers sit on stems that reach out from the hinges, and the track stands a set distance from the door so the wheels ride in the channel without the door's edge touching the track. The gap should be equal on both sides and slightly larger at the top of the vertical run, which is the taper that lets the door seal at the stop and release on opening. Unequal gaps are a sign the track has moved.
How often should the springs be lubricated, and with what?
Once or twice a year is a good rhythm, with autumn the most useful time because cold thickens grease. Use a garage-door lubricant, typically a silicone or lithium spray, applied along the coils so it works between them as the door cycles. Hinges, roller bearings and the end bearings benefit from the same treatment. Keep the track itself dry, since lubricant there gathers grit and slows the rollers.
