What's happening right now?

Door stuck open

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the door where it is: forcing it down or pressing the button again can bend it.
  2. Keep the doorway clear of people, pets and vehicles.
  3. The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Don't keep hitting the button. Repeated tries can do more damage than the first fault.
  2. Don't step or reach under the door to move anything. If a bin, bike or snow is in the way, mention it when you call.
  3. Don't bypass or re-aim the safety sensors by the floor to make it close.

A renovation changes the face of a house, and the old garage door can suddenly look out of place. We help homeowners in Shep pick panel styles, window inserts, colours and hardware that suit the new exterior, then install the door plumb and level so it looks intended rather than added.

The fix, explained · Shep

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementNothing broke outright, but the door has grown heavier each winter, opens more slowly and squeals as it moves.

The fix

On a door with two springs, replacement usually starts with a conversation about scope. Both springs have completed the same number of cycles, so when one breaks the other is typically close behind, and replacing the pair together gives the door two matched springs sharing the load evenly.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThe rollers on the door have been squealing for months.

The fix

Winter produces a particular version of this call. Slush melts under the door during the day, freezes overnight and glues the bottom seal to the slab.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementStanding inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy.

The fix

Winter is hard on the bottom of a garage door. Slush and road salt run off the car and pool exactly where the cables loop onto the bottom brackets, and wire rope that is wet and salted for four months a year rusts from the inside out.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe door climbs with the left corner ahead of the right, then twists as it turns into the ceiling track.

The fix

Extension springs are common on the detached garages behind older houses, where a low ceiling left no room for a torsion shaft, and those garages are rarely heated. Damp summers, hard frosts and salt carried in on the car pit the spring wire over the years, and a fatigued spring most often lets go on a cold morning when the…

The fix

The visit runs in a fixed order. On the phone you describe what the release did, where the door was, and what kind of opener hangs from the ceiling.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairThe motor runs, the chain rattles along the rail, and the door does not move a millimetre.

The fix

Winter changes what an opener is asked to do. Grease in the gear case and on the rail thickens in the cold, rollers turn stiffly, and the bottom seal can freeze to the concrete overnight so the door is briefly glued shut.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

  • Explained on the spot. As each part is checked, the technician tells you what it shows and what it means for the door as a whole.

  • Tidiness as standard. Old springs, cables and packaging leave with us, and the workspace is swept. A clean finish is part of every visit.

  • Options at your pace. Hear the choices, ask your questions, take the time you need. The work starts when you say so and not before.

New springs went in last year and the door balances well, yet it still clicks along the ceiling track like a train over rail joints. The wheels are the originals, worn to an oval, and the noise follows them from one end of the travel to the other.

You press the remote from the driveway and hear the motor hum overhead, a steady drone with no movement behind it. The door stays shut. Press again and the hum returns, then quits, as if the machine is trying and cannot get a grip on anything.

You want the ceiling back. A storage loft, a vehicle lift or kayak racks would fit if the long rail and motor box were not hanging in the middle of the garage, and the low ceiling of an older house leaves little room for the standard rail anyway.

What the census means at the door

38%

Homes of every age. About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where homes of different ages sit together, the common thread is that every door eventually needs springs, rollers, seals and a balance check. What differs is the spring type and the size, so the technician measures and matches rather than fitting a standard part.

37%

Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).

Townhouse rows generally have a narrow single door on each unit, with shared walls on both sides. Noise from a chain opener or dry rollers carries straight into the neighbour's home, so quiet belt-drive openers and nylon rollers are a popular and considerate choice here.

Short answers

Advice · (289) 805-2215

What is the board test?

It is the contact-reversal check. A short length of 2x4 lies flat on the floor in the middle of the opening and the door is closed from the wall button. When the bottom edge meets the wood, the door should halt and travel back up without help. Passing shows the opener's down-force and travel limits are set to back off from something solid. The technician never substitutes a hand or foot for the board.

Why should the opener never run with the manual lock engaged?

Because the opener is strong enough to lift a door heavier than a person, and it has no way of knowing a bar is in the track. It pulls, the bar bends, the lock body tears at its screws, the section can crease and the opener's gear or trolley takes the shock. Opener makers ask for manual locks to be disabled or removed when a motor is installed for exactly this reason.

What does stem length mean and why does it matter?

The stem is the steel shaft that passes through the hinge or fixture and carries the wheel. Most residential doors use a four-inch stem through a single hinge. Heavier doors have two hinges stacked at the ends of each section, and those need a seven- or ten-inch stem so the shaft reaches through both. A short stem in a double hinge sits loose, lets the wheel lean, and is a common reason a door leaves its track. The technician counts the hinges before choosing the set.

Why is there a gap between the track and the edge of the door?

That gap is intentional. The rollers sit on stems that reach out from the hinges, and the track stands a set distance from the door so the wheels ride in the channel without the door's edge touching the track. The gap should be equal on both sides and slightly larger at the top of the vertical run, which is the taper that lets the door seal at the stop and release on opening. Unequal gaps are a sign the track has moved.
