What's happening right now?

Door stuck open

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the door where it is: forcing it down or pressing the button again can bend it.
  2. Keep the doorway clear of people, pets and vehicles.
  3. The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Don't keep hitting the button. Repeated tries can do more damage than the first fault.
  2. Don't step or reach under the door to move anything. If a bin, bike or snow is in the way, mention it when you call.
  3. Don't bypass or re-aim the safety sensors by the floor to make it close.

A renovation changes the face of a house, and the old garage door can suddenly look out of place. We help homeowners in Mississauga pick panel styles, window inserts, colours and hardware that suit the new exterior, then install the door plumb and level so it looks intended rather than added.

The fix, explained · Mississauga

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementNothing broke outright, but the door has grown heavier each winter, opens more slowly and squeals as it moves.

The fix

On a door with two springs, replacement usually starts with a conversation about scope. Both springs have completed the same number of cycles, so when one breaks the other is typically close behind, and replacing the pair together gives the door two matched springs sharing the load evenly.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThe rollers on the door have been squealing for months.

The fix

Winter produces a particular version of this call. Slush melts under the door during the day, freezes overnight and glues the bottom seal to the slab.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementStanding inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy.

The fix

Winter is hard on the bottom of a garage door. Slush and road salt run off the car and pool exactly where the cables loop onto the bottom brackets, and wire rope that is wet and salted for four months a year rusts from the inside out.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe door climbs with the left corner ahead of the right, then twists as it turns into the ceiling track.

The fix

Extension springs are common on the detached garages behind older houses, where a low ceiling left no room for a torsion shaft, and those garages are rarely heated. Damp summers, hard frosts and salt carried in on the car pit the spring wire over the years, and a fatigued spring most often lets go on a cold morning when the…

Book soonEmergency Release RepairA previous owner knotted the release cord around the rail and stacked storage shelves right beneath it.

The fix

The visit runs in a fixed order. On the phone you describe what the release did, where the door was, and what kind of opener hangs from the ceiling.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairThe motor runs, the chain rattles along the rail, and the door does not move a millimetre.

The fix

Winter changes what an opener is asked to do. Grease in the gear case and on the rail thickens in the cold, rollers turn stiffly, and the bottom seal can freeze to the concrete overnight so the door is briefly glued shut.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

    The repair, then the test

Looking at the whole system. The spring system, the tracks and the opener are checked as one machine, because a fault in one part often starts in another.

The repair, then the test. New parts fitted, tension set, sensors aligned. The door then runs through several complete cycles before we consider the job finished.

What the census means at the door

38%

Homes of every age. About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Mixed neighbourhoods often include renovated older houses with a new facade and a garage door that no longer suits it. Choosing a door that ties the renovation together, then installing it plumb and balanced in an older opening, is work we do regularly and enjoy.

37%

Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).

In denser housing the garage door is frequently the main entrance to the home and sits close to the living space, so a door that closes fully and locks properly matters for security. We check the closing force, the lock and the opener's stored codes on every visit.

Short answers

Advice · (289) 805-2215

What does a new bottom seal do about water coming in?

It closes the gap between the door and the slab so rain and meltwater meet a continuous barrier. Where the driveway slopes toward the garage, or the slab edge has dipped, the seal alone is working against gravity, and a threshold seal glued to the floor adds a lip that turns water back toward the drive. The technician looks at where the water comes from and recommends the combination that suits your threshold.

What information helps when I book?

The size of the door and whether it is single or double, where you see daylight or feel drafts, whether the existing seal is a strip on a wood stop or a one-piece moulding, the colour of the trim, whether the wood near the floor feels soft, and whether the garage is attached or heated. Photos of the closed door from inside with the lights off, and of each corner from outside, are very useful.

Why should the opener never run with the manual lock engaged?

Because the opener is strong enough to lift a door heavier than a person, and it has no way of knowing a bar is in the track. It pulls, the bar bends, the lock body tears at its screws, the section can crease and the opener's gear or trolley takes the shock. Opener makers ask for manual locks to be disabled or removed when a motor is installed for exactly this reason.

Can any hinge go in any position?

Edge hinges belong to their own joint. Put a 3 where a 2 belongs and the roller sits at the wrong reach, so the door binds, gaps at the curve or fails to press against the jamb when closed. Centre hinges are the exception, since they all share the geometry of a 1. The technician reads the stamp on the old hinge or counts the joint from the floor before choosing the part.
